Positive Behavioral Interventions & Support (PBIS)

PBIS supports students’ behavior, academic, emotional, and mental health using an evidence-based three-tiered framework. Implementing the principles of PBIS creates positive, predictable, equitable, and safe learning environments where everyone thrives. The PBIS framework focuses on implementing practices using data to establish effective systems that improve student outcomes.

Everyone at South Middle School has the right to learn in a positive, predictable, equitable, and safe learning environment. Clear, consistent expectations are posted, taught, and re-taught throughout the school year. Students receive acknowledgements for positive behaviors to promote a positive school climate. At South Middle School, students and staff promote the 3Rs: Respectful, Ready, and Responsible.

Respectful

At South Middle School, everyone is expected to show respect for students, teachers, and other adults. Everyone is expected to recognize the rights and human dignity of all, and to refrain from name-calling, fighting, harassment, belittling, or engaging in deliberate attempts to

embarrass or harm others. Respect and take care of school property such as lockers,

walls, furniture, and school grounds.

Ready

Arrive to school and classes on time. All materials should be ready for class before the bell rings. There are four minutes in between classes so there is time to use the restroom, visit the restroom, and get water. Students should be ready for PE by changing into PE clothes and athletic shoes. Turn off all personal electronic devices at 7:30am.

Responsible

Students and staff participate fully in the learning process. Students should attend all classes regularly, pay attention to instructions, complete assignments to the best of their ability, and request help when needed. Avoid any behavior that detracts from learning. Help maintain reasonable orderliness in the school and in classrooms. Take care of books and other instructional materials. Refrain from gossiping, threatening, bullying, or fighting

with other students.
