AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance by ensuring that all students will succeed in a rigorous curriculum, increase involvement at school, and become educated and responsible participants and leaders in society.

AVID ELECTIVE CLASS INFORMATION

AVID elective class provides a curriculum that focuses on strong reading and writing skills, organization, study strategies for success, and research on colleges and careers.  AVID students also participate in Socratic-style tutorials two days per week. The AVID program targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. AVID places academically average students in advanced classes and provides them with an elective class that prepares them to succeed in rigorous curricula, and increase involvement at school.

SECONDARY AVID ELECTIVES

AVID COORDINATOR

AVID Coordinators help students and families make college dreams a reality. They teach the AVID Elective classes and are advocates for equity and inclusion. They empower students and families to help make college goals happen and to promote student success.

TUTORIALS

Trained AVID Tutors lead tutorial sessions twice each week in AVID Elective classes. Tutors are excellent role models of motivated, organized, and successful people. During each tutorial session, students come prepared with questions that they need assistance answering. In a small group setting, the tutor’s role is to guide the students as they assist one another. Tutorials help students who are enrolled in rigorous coursework keep up and succeed in their college prep classes.

AVID MIDDLE SCHOOL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

AVID is a program for students who have a GPA of 2.0-3.5 and a strong desire to go on to post secondary education. Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the least served students in the academic middle. Students in the program take an AVID elective class. The class focuses on writing, critical thinking, collaboration, reading, note-taking, study skills and college/career/motivational activities. Students are expected to keep an organized binder and take notes in class.  College tutors run tutorial sessions during the AVID Elective class twice per week.
